FamilyAlbum remains the reference: unlimited free storage, but with third-party ads in the feed and no end-to-end encryption.
MemoFamille hosts in France (AWS Paris) and follows GDPR, without claiming end-to-end encryption.
PrivateFamily encrypts end-to-end: photos, videos, captions, comments, names and child profiles are technically unreadable to us.

It depends on your priority. FamilyAlbum offers unlimited free storage but shows third-party ads since late 2025. PrivateFamily is free for up to 10 photos, with no ads at all. There's no single "best" app, just a different trade-off.
Only PrivateFamily, among those compared here, is end-to-end encrypted in the strict sense: neither photos nor comments are readable by the server. The other services at best encrypt traffic (HTTPS), which protects against interception but not against the publisher itself.
Google Photos, FamilyAlbum and MemoFamille all require an account (email or ID). WhatsApp requires a phone number. PrivateFamily only asks for a first name, with a single-use invitation code.
Google Photos and FamilyAlbum don't consistently state a hosting country on their public pages. MemoFamille states AWS Paris hosting. PrivateFamily hosts in Europe.
It varies by service, and it's a genuine, honest limitation for PrivateFamily today: there's no bulk export tool for the album, much like most of the apps compared here when switching solutions.
